Journeys in non-classical computation I: A grand challenge for computing research

چکیده
A gateway event [35] is a change to a system that leads to the possibility of huge increases in kinds and levels of complexity. It opens up a whole new kind of phase space to the system’s dynamics. Gateway events during evolution of life on earth include the appearance of eukaryotes (organisms with a cell nucleus), an oxygen atmosphere, multi-cellular organisms and grass. Gateway events during the development of mathematics include each invention of a new class of numbers (negative, irrational, imaginary, . . .), and dropping Euclid’s parallel postulate. A gateway event produces a profound and fundamental change to the system: Once through the gateway, life is never the same again. We are currently poised on the threshold of a significant gateway event in computation: That of breaking free from many of our current “classical computational” assumptions. Our Grand Challenge for computer science is

Journeys in Non-Classical Computation
Today’s computing, classical computing, is a remarkable success story. However, there is a growing appreciation that it encompasses only a small subset of all computational possibilities. There are several paradigms that seem to define classical computing, but these may not be true for all of computation. As these paradigms are systematically challenged, the subject area is widened and enriched...

متن کاملArtificial Immune Systems and the Grand Challenge for Non-classical Computation
The UK Grand Challenges for Computing Research is an initiative to map out certain key areas that could be used to help drive research over the next 10–15 years. One of the identified Grand Challenges is Non-Classical Computation, which examines many of the fundamental assumptions of Computer Science, and asks what would result if they were systematically broken. In this discussion paper, we ex...
متن کاملThe Grand Challenges and Myths of Neural-Symbolic Computation
The construction of computational cognitive models integrating the connectionist and symbolic paradigms of artificial intelligence is a standing research issue in the field. The combination of logic-based inference and connectionist learning systems may lead to the construction of semantically sound computational cognitive models in artificial intelligence, computer and cognitive sciences. Over...
متن کاملThe Grand Challenge in Non-Classical Computation International Workshop
In response to the grand challenge for computer science during a workshop held inEdinburgh in November 2002 we identified an essential problem in computing that hasyet to be addressed directly, see Appendix A for UKCRC Grand Challenge criteria(Addis et al., 2004). We show that this problem, originally identified by Wittgensteincirca 1945 (pub. posthumously, revised translation 1...
